Heimsoth's creativity comes from a childhood spent in rural Missouri
and an early love for the outdoors coupled with an exposure to painting
provided by several of his cousins who were artists. He
became
fascinated with art at an early age. After winning first prize on a pencil
drawing when only thirteen, he was admonished by his Pastor, "The Lord has
given you a talent that He doesn't give to everyone. Wouldn't it be a sin
if you didn't use it?" He has been painting ever since.

Neil Heimsoth's subject matter,
includes local scenes such as his paintings of country churches in the
Cole Camp area, and of specific areas that he finds interesting like
Bennett Springs. But these paintings are more than a realistic rendering
of a special place, they are more concerned with subtleties such as how
early morning sunlight illuminates a group of Sycamore trees bordering
a stream or the quiet beauty of a country church enveloped in the serenity
of a winter's snow or October's bright colors.

An avid reader and collector
of art books, Heimsoth has been influenced over the years by a number of
great artists. One of these, George Inness, once said "...A work of art
is not to instruct, not to edify, but to awaken an emotion. Its real greatness
consists in the quality and force of this emotion." The works of
Casper David Friedrich, the great German Romantic painter, have also been a
great inspiration, and the influence of both of these painters can be seen in
the paintings on these pages. Attempting to capture and portray this emotion
is the challenge of painting.
